The attorneys at Serotte Reich Wilson, LLP are frequently asked to speak on immigration issues at various conferences and seminars around North America.  Our attorneys also submit material on the latest immigration law changes to legal and professional publications.

February 2010 - William Reich and Andrew Wilson were both chosen for inclusion in the 2010 edition of the International Who's Who of Business Lawyers.

February 2010 - Andrew Wilson has been invited to speak at the 7th Annual AILA Conference/New England scheduled for February 26, 2010.  The conference is entitled "Immigration Law: Getting the Inside Track".  Mr. Wilson will speak on NAFTA and port of entry/border issues.  

January 2010 - Andrew Wilson was selected to serve a three-year term as a Panel Member for the Society for Human Resource Management's (SHRM's) Corporate Social Responsibility & Sustainability Special Expertise Panel.  SHRM Special Expertise Panels provide input to the SHRM Board, volunteers, members, and staff by identifying emerging trends in specific topic areas, providing expert advice on matters of professional significance, and providing guidance on matters of public policy. Panel members are appointed to a three-year term, and are selected based upon their specialized knowledge and demonstrated contribution to their field.  The 2010 panel nominees were selected using the SHRM Volunteer Opportunities Center, a comprehensive recruitment and selection process that assisted in the identification of panel members and allowed SHRM to broadly announce panel positions; and through referrals of both of both staff and current volunteers.  Those nominated were considered by a Panel Selection Committee composed of volunteer leaders and staff, who, in turn, submitted slates for each panel to the Governance Committee of the SHRM Board for review and approval. 

September 2009 - Andrew Wilson was selected for inclusion in the 2010 edition of The Best Lawyers in America in the specialty of Immigration Law.  The Best Lawyers in America publication has been described in The American Lawyer as "the most respected referral list of attorneys in practice."   

August 2009 - Senior Partner William Reich was featured in an article by Business First and the Buffalo Law Journal regarding the approval of a new EB-5 Regional Center in western New York.  The article is entitled "EB-5 Center Opens in an Effort to Attract Foreign Investment".

August 2009 - William Reich was selected named to Business First’s Who’s Who in Law 2009.  This selection was by a jury of his peers to be included in an exclusive list of the best lawyers in WNY. 

November 2008 - William Reich was selected for inclusion in New York Super Lawyers-Upstate Edition for 2008.  Only 5% of Upstate New York attorneys have been named to the list.  visit superlawyers.com

October 2008 - William Reich and Andrew Wilson have been invited by the Boston Bar Association to speak at their upcoming conference scheduled for November 12, 2008.  The conference is entitled "U.S. and Canadian Immigration Law Perspectives on the North American Free Trade Agreement in the Post 9/11 Era."  Mr. Reich and Mr. Wilson will speak on TNs, B-1 Busines Visitors, L-1s and Non-Immigrant Waivers.  

October 2008 - William Reich and Andrew Wilson will be speaking at an upcoming seminar sponsored by Sterling Education Services, Inc. scheduled for February 3, 2009.  The seminar is entitled "Employment Law Update" and Mr. Reich and Mr. Wilson's topic is entitled "Immigration Compoliance and Avoiding Liability".  Mr. Reich and Mr. Wilson will speak on I-9 compliance issues, Social Security No-Match Letters, E-Verify, and minimizing risks when hiring foreign nationals.

July 2008 - William Reich and Andrew Wilson will be speaking at an upcoming seminar sponsored by Lorman Education Services. Mr. Reich and Mr. Wilson will be speaking on I-9 compliance, E-Verify and Social Security No-Match Letters.

June 2008 - William Z. Reich, Senior Partner, spoke at the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) annual conference in Vancouver, BC, Canada.  Mr. Reich's topic was entitled "Tricky TNs: Hints and Hazards".  The session focused on the complexities of presenting TN applications and addressed current issues and suggestions for successful applications.  

February 2008 - William Z. Reich, Senior Partner, presented at an immigration law conference in Los Angeles on February 8, 2008. The immigration seminar focused on alternatives to H-1B’s. Mr. Reich addressed the B-1 Business Visitor classification, the L-1 Intracompany transferee, and the TN Trade non-immigrant categories. The conference was attended by lawyers, human resources professionals, and in-house corporate counsel.

June 2007 - June 2007- William Z. Reich, Esq., Senior Partner, spoke at the American Immigration Lawyer’s Association (AILA) annual conference which was held in Orlando, FL.  Mr. Reich was on an advanced panel dealing with waivers for inadmissible individuals.  Reich focused on waivers for inadmissible non-immigrants with special emphasis on Canadians who are visa exempt and have a differing waiver process.  The material published for the seminar is available upon request.

May 2007 -  Andrew Wilson recently spoke at SHRM's 38th Annual Staffing Management Conference & Exposition held in New Orleans. Mr. Wilson’s session was entitled “Recent Changes in Immigration Law that Affect HR Decision Making”. Mr. Wilson outlined current issues affecting visa issuance and travel permission, H-1B cap exemptions and strategies and green card backlog issues and strategies. The material and Power Point presentation from Mr. Wilson’s session is available upon request. 

June 2006 -  Sophie Feal and Jill Apa have recently contributed articles to the Buffalo Law Journal concerning the debate on immigration now before the U.S. Congress.

June 2006 - Sophie Feal has been invited to update and revise a chapter on asylum law in the Immigration Law and Procedure Desk Edition, a Matthew Bender publication.

November 2005 - Attorney Jill Apa has been invited to co-edit the Third Edition of Immigration Practice & Procedure Under the North American Free Trade Agreement, an American Immigration Lawyers Association publication.  Ms. Apa is also co-authoring an article along with senior partner, William Z. Reich, on the preparation and submission of NAFTA applications at the ports of entry post September 11th.  Additionally, Ms. Apa has been invited to revise two separate chapters on fiance visas and nonimmigrant issues in the Immigration Law and Procedure Desk Edition, a Matthew Bender publication. 

November 2005 - Andrew Wilson recently authored an article entitled “TN’s for Non-Degreed Professionals—Part of the NAFTA Family” for the 3rd Edition of the NAFTA Handbook published by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA).  This article focuses on two highly scrutinized TN categories—the Scientific Technician and the Management Consultant.  Mr. Wilson outlines the reasons for such scrutiny and provides insight into evaluating, preparing and documenting these types of TN’s.  Mr. Wilson previously wrote an article on “TN’s for Computer Professionals” for the 2nd Edition of AILA’s NAFTA Handbook.

June 2005 - Senior partner, William Z. Reich, has been invited to speak at the American Immigration Lawyers Association (AILA) National Conference in Salt Lake City, Utah.  Mr. Reich's presentation is intended for experienced immigration practitioners and will focus on the issues and complexities frequently encountered on the Northern Border.  As part of this presentation, Mr. Reich has authored an article entitled Strategies and Solutions to Overcome and Resolve Common Border Problems, which will be published in the AILA 2005 National Conference handbooks.

May 2005 - On May 4, 2005, Sophie Feal, as Chair of the Erie County Bar Association's Immigration Committee, organized a "Noonday Lecture" for Buffalo attorneys entitled, "The Child Citizenship Act of 2001:  Acquiring and Deriving U.S. Citizenship." Ms. Feal's guest speaker was Karen M. Eckert, a Supervisory Adjudications Officer from the Buffalo office of U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, and an expert on citizenship and foreign adoption

issues.

May 2005 -  Sophie Feal, Chair of the Immigration Litigation Group at Serotte Reich Wilson spoke on a panel at the Race and Reconciliation Conference in Buffalo.  The conference was presented by the Commission on Citizens' Rights and Community Relations of the City of Buffalo.  Ms. Feal spoke on a panel entitled "Civil and Human Rights as a Component in Shaping Responsive Government" along with representatives from the U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Marshal, Amnesty International-USA, and the National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives (NOBLE).

April 2005 - Jill Apa recently co-authored a chapter for the PERM Guidebook for Foreign Labor Certification, a LexisNexis publication featuring articles contributed by several prominent members of the Academy of Business Immigration Lawyers.  Ms. Apa and William Z. Reich, Serotte, Reich & Wilson senior partner, co-authored the chapter discussing the implementation of the PERM regulations and how this new labor certification process will affect small business employers.  In 2005, Ms. Apa was also invited to edit the Immigration chapter for the Department of Homeland Security Deskbook, a Matthew Bender & Company publication.  The chapter discusses a range of issues that have impacted U.S. immigration law since the abolishment of the Immigration and Naturalization Service and subsequent implementation of the Department of Homeland Security. 

March 2005 - On March 24, 2005, Sophie Feal has been invited to lecture at the University of Buffalo Law School in an innovative class called "Immigration and Crime Control."  The students in the class, including a law clerk at SRW, will also interview and produce short documentary films regarding persons, including attorneys, client and govenment officials, who are involved in immigration law enforcement objectives that coincide with crime control.  Ms. Feal will also be the subject of an interview by the students.  Professor Teresa Miller, who teaches the seminar, calls the class a very unique learning experience.

February 2005 - On January 31, 2005, Wedade Abdallah presented to the Muslim Public Affairs Council of Western New York on "Issues of US-Canadian Border Crossing for American-Muslims".  Ms. Abdallah is a frequent speaker on issues concerning Muslims in todays political climate.

February 2005 - Wedade Abdallah was selected as the featured speaker by the State University of New York at Buffalo for a presentation entitled "Legal Issues Facing Refugees, Immigrants and Asylum Seekers".  Ms. Abdallah spoke on the legal aspects involved in the process of resettlement in the U.S.  Ms. Abdallah also spoke on the ramifications of the Patriot Act.

February 2005 - SRW Senior Partner, William Z. Reich, and SRW associate attorney, Jill A. Apa, authored a chapter on the new PERM regulations to be featured in The PERM Guidebook for Foreign Labor Certification, a LexisNexis publication set for release in April 2005.  The entire book is comprised of insightful articles written by prominent immigration attorneys and members of the Academy of Business Immigration Lawyers.  The chapter by Mr. Reich and Ms. Apa highlights how the new PERM rules will affect small employers.  Other articles focus on a variety of subjects including refiling labor certification applications under the new PERM rules, strategies for avoiding audits, foreign language requirements and electronic storage of documents.  As we head into the new PERM era, this book will undoubtedly be viewed as an invaluable resource for immigration practitioners as well as human resource professionals.

February 2005 - Jill Apa is authoring an article for a soon to be published book about PERM published by LexisNexis.  The book's contributions include some of the top immigration attorneys in the country and it will be a critical resource for all practitioners.  Ms. Apa will provide guidance on the special considerations small companies will need to address under PERM.

January 2005 - Sophie Feal was invited to train attorneys who participate in the Erie County Bar Association's Assigned Counsel Program on January 28, 2005. Her training was entitled "Immigration Consequences of Criminal Convictions:  A Legal Update."  She gave a similar training in Rochester, New York on November 6, 2004 for the New York State Defenders Association.  She has also trained the Erie County public defenders on this issue in the past.

January 2005 - William Reich and Andrew Wilson are scheduled to speak on March 4, 2005 at the Natural Business Institute's  immigration seminar entitled "Immigration Law Tactics and Techniques for Employers".  Geared towards HR and business professionals, the seminar will cover a wide range of immigration issues including PERM, Consular Processing and I-9 Employment Verification.

October 2004 - Ms. Feal organized a conference for the Upstate New York Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyers Association which was held on October 1, 2004.  The conference, called, "A Brave New World:  Practicing U.S. Immigration Law on the Canadian Border in the 21st Century," included speakers from the Department of Homeland Security, the U.S. U.S. Consulate in Toronto, the Agent in Charge of the FBI in Buffalo, and nationally recognized immigration lawyers.

May 2004 - In May 2004, Ms. Feal was a panelist, along with the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of New York and a University of Buffalo Law Professor, on the U.S. PATRIOT Act.  the program, sponsored by the Bar Association of Eric County, was entitled, "Legal Weapon vs. Legal Rights on the 'War on Terrorism:'  the USA PATRIOT Act, Immigration Law, Citizens'  and Noncitizens' Rights."
