The Green Card
While some individuals plan on returning to live back in their home country after their stay in the U.S., others aspire to stay and obtain the brass ring-the green card-a.k.a immigrant visa or legal permanent resident status. However, knowing where you want to go, and knowing how to get there are two different things.
Green card options are broken up into two main groupings-family-based and employment-based. Family-based options include relatives of U.S. citizens and/or legal permanent residents. (Green Card Through Marriage to U.S. Citizen) Employment-based options include individuals at the top of their field, international managers/executives and those who obtained approved labor certifications.
There is also the opportunity to obtain U.S. permanent residency through the EB-5 investment program.
Green card procedures are satiated with bureaucratic impediments, and they are usually more complex than non-immigrant visas. The materials in this section are designed to shed some light on that complexity, and to distinguish between the pros and cons of the various family-based and employment-based green card options.
